How Kind Are You?
Kindness is more important than ever. Find you why.
Kindness is where graciousness begins.
This month’s post starts with a quick recap of what "Gracious Culture" really means. From there, we'll dive into kindness—the first of six core attributes that bring Gracious Culture to life. We'll explore kindness from different perspectives and discover its connection to Thai culture. To wrap it up, I'll share five simple action steps to make kindness part of your daily life.
Let's get started!
Gracious Culture: More Than Just a Concept
Before we dive into "kindness," let's take a step back to remind ourselves of the definition of "Gracious Culture.":
"Gracious Culture" is a way of life where kindness, respect, mindfulness, compassion, generosity, and humility come together, fostering a happier and more fulfilling life for everyone.
And there you have it! The heart of Gracious Culture revolves around these six powerful words:
Kindness
Respect
Mindfulness
Compassion
Generosity
Humility
And while we draw inspiration from Thailand and its gracious culture, it's important to remember that graciousness knows no borders. No matter where you are, you can embrace graciousness and make it a way of life. To summarise, Gracious Culture is a harmonious blend of kindness, respect, mindfulness, compassion, generosity, and humility.
In this post, we’re kicking off the series with the first attribute: kindness!
More Than Just a Smile
Kindness is the heartbeat of "Gracious Culture."
"The quality of being generous, helpful, and caring about other people, or an act showing this quality" is the definition of kindness by the Cambridge Dictionary.
At its core, kindness is rooted in a genuine concern for the well-being of others. Kindness loses meaning if you don't care about how others feel. But when you genuinely care, kindness shines through in small, thoughtful actions - holding the door open, offering a helping hand, listening actively, or sharing a compliment. While friendliness and politeness are aspects of kindness, genuine kindness goes deeper, blending friendliness, politeness, helpfulness, and generosity- and this is important, without expecting anything in return.
But how do you start being kind? Well, it begins with yourself.
Where Does Kindness Start?
Kindness starts with you!
Before Simone Biles, the most decorated gymnast in history, stepped onto the balance beam at the Paris Olympics this year, she took a deep breath and told herself, "You got this." This small moment of self-assurance and self-kindness is a powerful reminder of putting yourself first. It also reflects a recurring theme of "Gracious Culture": before being truly kind or gracious to others, you must first look after yourself. Like Simone Biles, you can be fiercely competitive, feel disappointed when you don’t achieve your goals, and work even harder to improve - but at the same time, remember not to be too hard on yourself.
If I asked you to list everything you love, how long would it take before you finally mentioned yourself?
Self-kindness means treating yourself with the same compassion, patience, and forgiveness you'd show a friend. Imagine you make a mistake at work - rather than jumping to self-criticism, try saying, "It's okay; everyone makes mistakes. What can I learn from this?" Of course, that's easier said than done. In the evening, when I reflect on the day in the hotel, especially if we faced challenges with guests or didn't quite hit the mark on creating a memorable experience, it lingers with me. I wonder if I could have done more or handled things differently. But in these moments, instead of thinking, "I messed things up," it's essential to remind yourself, "I did my best, and what I did felt right at the time."
Once you’re kind to yourself, you’ll be ready to spread that kindness to others.
