12 Secrets from the Thai Concept of "Sanuk"

Work is all about having fun, or?

Work is all about having fun!

A few years ago, during an interview for a job I applied for, I was asked what I believed was crucial for delivering exceptional guest experiences. I replied, "Ensuring the team has fun at work." The hiring manager's expression said it all—I knew right then that I wasn't getting the job. And, sure enough, I didn't. Some managers perceive having fun at work as unprofessional or a distraction from productivity.

Maximizing fun is so vital that, in the lead-up to our annual associate party, our hotel nearly comes to a standstill.

Ensuring our celebration reaches maximum fun levels takes precedence over everything else. It's so important that I sometimes feel frustrated when tasks are delayed, or guest service is neglected because the entire team is out selecting dresses for the show. At the same time, I'm amazed by the care and thought that goes into the planning, ensuring everyone has the best possible time.

In Thailand, having fun is essential in every aspect of daily life

Having fun is so important in Thai culture that there is even a dedicated word: "Sanuk"!

Gracious Culture Principle 04: SANUK

But "Sanuk" is so much more than fun.

"Sanuk" goes beyond just fun—it's better translated as "lighthearted." It embodies joy, happiness, having a good time, and thriving in the workplace and everyday life. Sanuk ensures that every experience is infused with joy. This doesn't mean downplaying or sugarcoating challenges but acknowledging the resilience, seriousness, and professionalism required for demanding tasks while maintaining a positive and engaging atmosphere.

"Sanuk" is about creating a joyful atmosphere while remaining productive, professional, and hardworking.

Working in a paddy field is arduous, with intense physical labour, muddy fields, extreme weather, monotonous tasks, and long days. Despite the challenges and lack of fun in the work itself, Thais have a unique gift for creating a joyful and lighthearted atmosphere. Whether it's during breaks, sharing meals, or fostering a sense of community, they infuse joy into their surroundings, making even the toughest tasks more bearable.

Creating the feeling of "Sanuk" is essential. So, how do you craft a "Sanuk" environment?
